In Loving Memory of

Daryl Richard Nelson

Daryl Nelson was born on August 31, 1944 in Slayton, Minnesota to Frans and Nora (Larson) Nelson.  He grew up in Slayton and graduated from Slayton High School in 1962.  Following high school Daryl attended Worthington Community College in Worthington, MN.  On November 12, 1966 he and Frances (Fran) Somers were married at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Avoca, MN.  Following their marriage they made their home in Slayton where Daryl worked for Nobles Cooperative Electric as a lineman.  They later divorced.  On August 10, 1984 he and Jeaneen (Kesteloot) Stelter were married at St. Mary’s Chapel in Marshall, MN.  Following their marriage they made their home in Slayton.  Daryl later became a line foreman for Nobles Cooperative Electric.  Daryl retired in 2006 after 42 years of service.  Daryl passed away at his home in Slayton on Sunday, January 8, 2017 at the age of 72. Daryl was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church. He taught gun safety training for 13 years, was a member of the Slayton Optimist Club, served on the Slayton / Murray County Central School Board, and Slayton Country Club Board.  Daryl was very active with the Murray County DFL and Senate District #22 presently serving as treasurer for both.  Daryl enjoyed spending time with his grandkids, fishing, bird watching, woodworking, golfing, time at the cabin and serving as a volunteer reader for 2nd grades at West Elementary for 8 years.  Daryl was a handyman, jack-of-all-trades and a perfectionist in all he did.  His most treasured moments and happiest times were times he spent with his 11 grandchildren.  

Survivors include his wife, Jeaneen Nelson of Slayton, MN, four children Brenda (John) Koniar of Minneapolis, MN, Debra (Mark) Larsen of Cologne, MN, Mike (Chantelle) Stelter of Slayton, MN, and Ryan (Gretchan) Stelter of Marshall, MN, special family friend, Becky Cherop of Little Canada, MN, 11 grandchildren and four siblings and their spouses, Charles D. (Margaret) Nelson of Slayton, MN, Mayme (Larry) Halverson Marshall, MN, Bev Gylling of Tyler, MN, and Shirley (Pat) Brosseau of Cottage Grove, MN, mother-in-law, Carol Kesteloot of Marshall, MN, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.  He is preceded in death by his parents, one bother, Donald Nelson, one brother–in-law, Roger Gylling, and father-in-law, Vic Kesteloot.

Funeral Services

St. Ann’s Church in Slayton, MN on Friday, January 13, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. with Fr. Thien Nguyen officiating.  The organist is Judy Andrews.  The song leader is Rita Lear.  The pallbearers are Richard Andert, Clayton Minnehan, Gerald McCord, Leroy Johnson, Eric Carlson and Dan Mihin.  The honorary pallbearers are Siebe Muller, Larry Halverson, Bob Schreurs, and Brandon Chapman. A private interment will take place at St. Ann’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at St. Ann’s Church in Slayton from 4-7 p.m. with a prayer services at 7:00 p.m.  Visitation will also be one hour prior to the services at the church on Friday.
