Mary Jean Moritz

Mary Jean Moritz was born on October 7, 1924 in Howard, South Dakota to Henry and Tillie Lauer Lewis.  She grew up in Howard until her mother passed away.  Shortly after that the family moved to a farm located between Slayton and Avoca, MN. For a while after that she went to live with her grandparents in Le Mars, IA.  Mary Jean attended school in Le Mars.   The family was later reunited and moved to Woodstock, MN.  On March 2, 1957 she and Leo Moritz were married in Woodstock, MN.  Following their marriage they made their home near Iona, MN until 1970 when they moved to Iona and raised their four children.  Leo passed away on September 14, 1982.  Mary Jean remained in Iona until 2008 when she moved to Westside Apartments in Slayton.  In 2013 she moved to Monarch Meadows Senior Community in North Mankato, MN.  Mary Jean passed away there on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at the age of 92.  She was a member of St. Columba Church in Iona where she was active in the CCW.  She also was a past member of the Iona VFW Auxiliary.  Mary Jean enjoyed working with plants, flowers, gardening, watching Wheel of Fortune and taking a drive in the country looking at the trees, especially Evergreens, and then a stop at Arby’s for a roast beef sandwich.  Mary Jean’s true joy was her family she loved receiving pictures of the grandchildren and their families and would show them to everyone.

 Survivors include her four children and their spouses, Randy and Karen Moritz of North Mankato, MN, Roxanne and Marshall “Bud” Kooiman of Slayton, MN, Ronald Moritz of Edina, MN, and Russell and Brenda Moritz of Rochester, MN; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Clementine Lewis of Fulda, MN; and one sister-in-law, Inez Lewis of New Hope, MN.  She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Leo, one infant sibling, and one brother, LeRoy Lewis.

Funeral Services

St. Columba Church in Iona, MN on Monday, May 1, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Thien Nguyen officiating.  The organist is Sharon Lais.  The song leader is Joanne Halbur.  The pallbearers are her grandchildren.  Interment is at St. Columba Cemetery in Iona, MN.
