Michael Ommen

Michael Ommen, the son of Verlyn “Doc” and Marilyn (Kunz) Ommen, was born on June 24, 1965 in Worthington, MN. He grew up in Fulda and attended St. Paul’s Elementary School.  Then during his High School years, the family moved to a farm northwest of Fulda. Mike graduated from the Fulda High School in 1983 and Mankato State University in 1988. Mike was united in marriage to Susan Gantriis on June 17, 1989 in Willmar, MN. To this union was born two children. He worked as the sports editor for the newspapers in Indianola, IA and Iowa Falls, IA. Mike then worked for Frigidaire in Webster City, IA until his health forced him to retire. Mike moved back to Fulda in 2010 and has been a resident of Hospice of Murray County and the Fulda New Dawn. Mike passed away on Sunday, April 17, 2016 after a courageous battle with brain cancer at his New Dawn home in Fulda at the age of 50. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fulda. Mike loved sports and was very knowledgeable of past and present players and teams. He took a keen interest in the Minnesota pro teams and his Fulda Raiders. He knew more about sports and athletes than anyone and had a special knack of retaining facts and could talk about them for days. Mike was very proud of the Urn that his uncle made for him. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, in particular his nieces and nephews.

Survivors include his children, Kirby Ommen (girlfriend Jacie Simon) of West Des Moines, IA and Carrie Ommen of St. Paul, MN; parents, Doc and Marilyn Ommen of Fulda, MN, sister, Jolene (Terry) Hansen and their children, Brooke, Autumn and Blaine Erdman, Skylar and Cole Hansen all of Spencer, IA; brother, Mark (Stacey) Ommen and their children, Logan, Dylan and Tyson Ommen all of Luverne, MN; paternal grandmother, Marie Ommen of Fulda, MN and his dog, Daisy. He is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, paternal grandfather and maternal step-grandfather.

Funeral Services

St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Fulda, MN at 2:00 PM on Friday, April 22, 2016 with Rev. Shawn Ethridge officiating.  The organist is Loretta Gehl. The soloist is A.W. Koopman. The honorary pallbearers are his nieces and nephews. Interment at Prairie Hill Cemetery Fulda, MN prior to the service. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to Hospice of Murray County, New Dawn, DAC of Murray County, American Cancer Society or St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fulda.

Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 7 PM at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. The Totzke Funeral Home in Fulda is assisting the family with arrangements.
