Joyce Speth Obituary

In Loving Memory Of

Joyce Speth

Joyce Speth passed away peacefully on April 7, 2024 in the presence of her family at Samaritan Bethany in Rochester.  Due to the heat on July 19, 1927, Leona Joyce Leopold was born outside on the lawn at the farm of her parents William and Grace (Duncan) Leopold near Kinbrae, Minnesota.

Joyce attended elementary school in Kinbrae and graduated from Fulda High School in 1944. She married Raymond Rindflesch of Heron Lake in 1946 and they had two sons, Thomas and Bruce. This marriage ended in annulment and she married Gene Speth of Windom in 1970. Joyce and Gene traveled extensively, for his job in the western states and for several visits to Thomas in Washington D.C. They went to several of Gene’s military reunions in the eastern states and traveled to Guatemala to visit her brother, William Leopold Jr. and family, who were engaged in community development work there. After getting married, Joyce and Gene lived in Windom and East Chain before moving to the farm near Kinbrae where she was born. Since 2020 Joyce had lived in Rochester to be near her daughter-in-law, Nancy Rindflesch and Bruce and Nancy’s children. Joyce played the organ at St. Mary’s Catholic church in Dundee after her mother died in 1950. She also played the piano and led sing-a-longs at Maple Lawn in Fulda for many years. She was the postmaster in Kinbrae for many years. She was a member of the Dundee Legion (Joseph Suding Post) Auxiliary for 43 years. Joyce enjoyed knitting and was particularly adept at making sweaters with complicated Aran Islands patterns. She was noted in her family for knitting stockings on four needles and giving them as gifts.

Joyce is predeceased by her parents, her husband, Gene, who died in 2009, and son, Bruce, who died in 2015. She is survived by her brother, William Leopold Jr. and wife, Carol, along with their children, John, Jim, and Julie. She is also survived by son, Thomas, Bruce’s widow, Nancy, grandchildren, Bruce and Nancy’s son, Aaron and wife, Jodi, and Bruce and Nancy’s daughter, Shana Daily and husband Roy. Finally, she is survived by great grandchildren, Amanda, Bradley, Cole, Drew, Jacob, and Lucas, and step-great grandchildren and cousins.
