Jean Selma Asplin

Jean Asplin was born on November 8, 1933 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Helger and Selma Lundgren Anderson.  She grew up in Minneapolis and graduated from Washburn High School in 1951.  Jean attended the University of Minnesota with a major in Dietetics, graduating with honors in 1955. Jean was a member of Gamma Bate Sorority.  Jean then attended the University of Iowa where she received her Masters Degree in Nutrition.  On September 21, 1956 she and Roger Asplin were married in Minneapolis.  Following their marriage they made their home in St. Paul for one year and Jean worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital.  In 1957 they moved to Aberdeen, SD where Jean taught at St. Luke’s Hospital.  In 1958 they moved to Slayton, MN.  Jean worked at the Murray County Medical Center plus did consulting for many area hospitals and nursing homes until her retirement in 2009.  Although retired Jean continued Dietetic Education Programs at the Tracy Hospital and did consulting at Prairie View in Slayton.  Jean loved being a Veterinarian’s wife and all that came with it like helping with calls and clients. Roger passed away on May 26, 2011.  Due to a cancer diagnosis Jean moved in with her daughter, Cindy in Richfield, MN.  Jean passed away at her daughter’s home with her family around her on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at the age of 84.  She was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church in Slayton where she taught Bible Study, release time and Sunday school, and was active in the women’s group holding many different offices.  She also served as church President and on the Alter Committee. Jean and Roger enjoyed camping and fishing trips to Manitoba and Saskatchewan, Canada as well as an African Safari in Zambia, touring Rhodesia and South Africa.  Jean was an active member of Go Getters 4-H Club, Extension Group, Monday Study Club, the Murray County Health Alliance Foundation and the Hospital Auxiliary.  She also served as a hospice volunteer.  Jean enjoyed spending time with family, traveling, dancing, gardening and playing the accordion. 

Survivors include her four children and their families, Nancy and Greg Rino of Casper, WY, Cindy and Keith Larson of Richfield, MN, Sally and Rick Remington of San Clemente, CA, Brent and Sue Asplin of Barrington Hills, IL, 10 grandchildren Rene Rino, Fawn Wallace, Zeb Rino, Chelsie and Amy Larson, Aspyn and Camden Remington, Will Asplin, Hope Kuvalja, Hannah Nylander Asplin, five great-grandchildren, Eralys Wallace, Ava Wallace, Brady Rino, Celby Rino and Davis Rino, two sisters, Norma Asplin of Dassel, MN, and Karen Nelson and her husband, Ross of Webster, MN, one brother-in-law, Tom Locke of Merrifield, MN and one sister-in-law, Virginia Anderson of Dassel, MN.  She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Roger, sister, Judy Locke, father and mother-in-law, Viola and Albert Asplin, two brothers-in-law, Russell Asplin and Edwin Anderson, and nephew, Chuck Asplin.

Memorial Service

Christ Lutheran Church in Slayton, MN on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Dawn Quame officiating.  The organist is Brenda Whitehead with special music by Heidi Winter. Interment will be at Steelesville Cemetery in Dassel, MN.

In lieu of flowers memorial’s may be directed to Hospice of Murray County, Christ Lutheran Church or to donor’s choice.  Visitation will be on Saturday, February 17, 2018 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in Slayton.
