Phyllis Marie Bloemendaal

Phyllis Bloemendaal was born on December 5, 1931 in Worthington, Minnesota to Emery and Minnie Bearden Chapman.  In 1946 the family moved to a farm near Woodstock, MN.  Phyllis graduated from Lake Wilson High School in 1949.  On September 30, 1949 she and Fredric “Fritz” Bloemendaal were married at the United Methodist Church in Lake Wilson, MN.  Following their marriage they farmed in Lowville Township and raised their two children.  They retired in 1994 but remained on the farm until 1996 when they moved to Lake Wilson.  Phyllis and Fritz enjoyed spending many winters in Yuma, AZ.  In 2018 Phyllis moved to Sunrise Terrace Apartments in Slayton, MN.  Fritz passed away on February 4, 2019.  Due to failing health Phyllis moved to Our House Hospice Home on September 27, 2019 and passed away there on Monday, October 14, 2019 at the age of 87.  Phyllis was a member of the United Methodist Church in Lake Wilson where she served as Lay Leader, taught Sunday school, sang in the church choir and was a UMW Advisor.  Phyllis enjoyed spending time with family, attending school activities, being active in the community, and took great pride in her yard work.

Survivors included her two children, Lynne Day of Minnetonka, MN, and Thomas Bloemendaal and his wife, Diane of Ruidoso, NM, five grandchildren and their spouses, Lindsay and Philip Alejandrino, Luke Day and Lisa Gebhard, Jenna and Andy Hernandez, Brittany and Ryan Bedford and Thomas and Sid Bloemendaal, six great-grandchildren, and one sister, Judy Onken of Bellevue, NE.  She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Fritz, two brothers and their spouses, Harold and Agnes Chapman, Francis and Beverly Chapman, two sisters and their spouses, Donna and Lewellyn Wendt, and Lois and William Slinger, and one brother-in-law, Gerald Onken. 

Memorial Services

United Methodist Church in Lake Wilson, MN on Saturday, October 19, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Ethanie Schmidt officiating.  The organist is Janet Voges with special music by Heidi Winter.  Interment is at Slayton Memorial Gardens, Slayton, MN.

Visitation will be on Friday, October 18, 2019 at the Totzke Funeral Home in Slayton from 4-6 p.m. and also one hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday.   In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Our House Hospice of Slayton or to the United Methodist Church in Lake Wilson
