Doris Emma Fitzgerald

Doris Fitzgerald was born on January 23, 1927 in Slayton, Minnesota to August and Edna Schmidt Gilbertson.  She grew up west of Chandler, MN and attended country school.  On December 17, 1947 she and Harold “Holly” Fitzgerald were married at St. Columba Church in Iona.  Following their marriage they made their home in Iona.  Doris worked at Campbell’s Soup in Worthington, MN for over 20 years.  Holly passed away on October 29, 2010.  In June 2019 Doris became a resident of Crossroads Care Center in Worthington.  She passed away there on Saturday, January 25, 2020 at the age of 93.  Doris was a member of St. Columba Church in Iona.  Doris enjoyed being with her family, flowers, listing to Polka music and her pets.

Survivors include her three children, Michael Fitzgerald of Iona, MN, Carol Jean McCarty of Cottonwood, AZ, and Thomas Fitzgerald and his wife, Deb of Iona, MN, five grandchildren, Nye and Kate McCarty, Devlin and Nikki McCarty, Chris Fitzgerald, Shannon and Brian Thomas and Ryan Fitzgerald, eight great-grandchildren, two sisters, Delphia (Del) Vandenburg of Pipestone, MN, and Sharon Ness of Slayton, MN, one sister-in-law, Bertha Gilbertson of Iona, MN and several nieces and nephews and their families.  She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Holly, son-in-law, Dan McCarty, two brothers, Darrell “Sparky” Gilbertson and Dewaine Gilbertson, one brother-in-law, Cornie Vandenburg and one nephew, Gary Vandenburg.  

Funeral Services

St. Columba Church in Iona, MN on Saturday, February 1, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. with Fr. Thien Nguyen officiating.  The organist is Sharon Lais.  The song leader is Sheila Crowley.  The pallbearers are her grandchildren.  Interment is at St. Columba Cemetery in Iona, MN.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday.
