Earl Johnson Obituary

Earl LeRoy Johnson peacefully passed away on January 17, 2020, with his loving family by his side. He was 88 years old.

Earl was born to Herman and Caroline (Reinholdt) Johnson on June 14, 1931, in Mason Township, Slayton, Minnesota. He grew up on the family farm where he learned how to farm, hunt, and worship. Earl loved to roller-skate and was well known for his wheel-based moves. He could also be found on Lake Shetek swimming and skiing. Earl graduated from Slayton High School and shortly thereafter enlisted in the US Army.

He was deployed to Korea and spent fourteen months overseas. During his time in the service, Earl was an exemplary soldier and received several commendations. He was proud to serve his country and be a member of the Armed Forces.

After returning from Korea, Earl met Shirley Ann House, and the two quickly became inseparable. They were married on February 27, 1960. Earl and Shirley were blessed with three sons and raised them on the family farm. Earl shared his passions with his boys and taught them everything he knew about hunting and trapping over many seasons. His affinity for the water was also passed down to the boys, who learned to ski, swim, and appreciate the lake at a young age.

Earl grew crops and raised cows on the family farm for 41 years. In addition to farming, Earl served as a Mason Township Board Member and worked part time at the FSA office. He stopped farming in 1996 but remained busy around the farm, participated in conservation efforts, tended to his garden, and spent time with his many grandchildren. After retiring, Earl and Shirley traveled around the country and lived part time in Tucson, Arizona, where they made many friends. They were blessed with 60 years of marriage and many treasured memories.

Earl loved to share his passions and knowledge. Many generations will remember the time spent hunting and fishing with him. No matter the activity, Earl loved to be in the field and taught so many the joys of being an outdoors man. The only activity Earl loved more than hunting was playing games. He cherished the time spent playing cards and teaching the rules of the game to friends and family.

Throughout his life, Earl was an active member of the Lake Sarah Baptist Church. Faith was incredibly important to him, and he used his talents and skills to help the church grow. Earl served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and Church Treasurer throughout his time at Lake Sarah Baptist. Earl also loved sharing his faith with younger generations, actively participating in the Baptist Camp and serving on its board.

Earl is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley A. Johnson; his sons, Tony, Allan (Liddy Misener); Chad (Julie); his sister, Bernice; his sister-in-law, Eileen; his eight grandchildren, Tony (Melissa), Tucker, Thomas, Emma, Annika, Davis and Morgan, Lilly, and Kaiden; his five great grandchildren, Isaiah, Capri, Declan, Greyson, and Lainey; and many others who loved him.

A celebration of Earl’s life will be held at the Lake Sarah Baptist Church on Saturday, July 10, 2021. The visitation will begin at 10:00 AM with the service to follow at 11:00 AM. All are welcome to attend.
