Hilda Nina Grieme
Hilda Grieme, the daughter of Michael and Lena (Streit) Bonnstetter, was born on June 16, 1931 in Lotts Creek, IA. She grew up on a farm near Algona, IA until her parents purchased a farm near Slayton, MN. Hilda stayed with her brother, Tony and his family for 2 months so she could graduate from Rodman High School in Rodman, IA. After moving to Slayton, she worked at the Mint Café for a year before moving to California to live with her sister, Marie. She returned to Slayton 2 years later and worked at the Mint Café and met “Jiggs” Ellefson. After Jiggs returned from the Korean War they were married on July 27, 1952 in California. After their marriage they moved to a farm by Garvin, MN, which is now the Garvin Park. In June of 1968 they moved to a farm 6 miles north of Slayton and in 1970 they moved into Slayton. Hilda worked at Sears Catalog and in 1971 she started working at Nordins Super Value and later became the produce manager for 40 years. In 1990 she married Don Grieme and they lived in Slayton. After retiring as produce manager, she still worked in produce for another 2 to 3 years. Hilda remained at home after Don’s death in May of 2008 until she moved in with her daughter in 2016. Hilda passed away on Saturday, August 29, 2020 at her home, surrounded by her family, at the age of 89. She enjoyed baking, cooking, birds, squirrels, flowers, especially yellow flowers and playing Yahtzee.
Survivors include her 3 children, Kathy Platt of Slayton, MN, Bill (Kathy) Ellefson of Slayton, MN and Cindy (Ryan) West of Amiret, MN; 8 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; sister, Stella Swanson of Balaton, MN and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Jiggs and Don, 1 sister and 4 brothers.
Funeral Services
A private family service will be held at St. Ann’s Catholic Cemetery Slayton, MN with Rev. Jeffrey William officiating.
The Totzke Funeral Home in Slayton is assisting the family with arrangements.
