Karen Rae Powell
Karen Powell was born on May 23, 1946 in Slayton, Minnesota to Ray and Beulah Smestad Powell. She grew up in Slayton and graduated from Slayton High School in 1964. On July 10, 1964 she and John Tims were married at the United Methodist Church in Slayton. Following their marriage they made their home in Iona, MN until 1970 when the family moved to Minnesota Lake, MN. In 1977 they moved to Blue Earth, MN. Karen and John divorced in 1981. Karen then moved to Mankato, MN and worked for GTE and later Fastline in advertising sales. Karen married Roger Kilanowski. They made their home in Minneapolis and later retuned to Mankato. In 2009 they divorced. Karen moved to Norfolk, NE to be near her son, David and his family. In 2013 Karen returned to Slayton to be near her parents. In late 2013 due to health issues, Karen returned to Omaha and became a resident of Azria Health Montclair. Karen passed away at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha on Sunday, October 25, 2020 at the age of 74. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, watching the Minnesota Vikings, and crocheting.
Survivors include her two sons, Dennis Tims of Waupun, WI, and David Tims and his wife, Kim of Elkhorn, NE, two step-children and their spouses, Chris and Nicole Kilanowski of Owatonna, MN and Jennifer and Elmo Beehler of Onamia, MN, five grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, her mother, Beulah Powell of Hudson, WI, two siblings and their spouses, Brad and Sharon Powell of West Union, SC, and Nancy and Jim Phipps of River Falls, WI, and one sister-in-law, Lynda Powell of Pequot Lakes, MN. She is preceded in death by her father, Ray, and brother, Russ Powell.
A private family service will be held at Slayton Memorial Gardens in Slayton on Saturday, October 31, 2020 with Rev. Ethanie Schmidt officiating. Honorary pallbearers are Calloway Tims, Kayla Tims, James Powell and Jim Phipps. A public celebration of life will take place at a later time.
