In Loving Memory of
Marjorie “Marge” Louise Gehlsen
Marge Gehlsen was born on February 9, 1924 in Slayton, Minnesota to Walter and Ethel Gray Samuelson. She grew up on the family farm in Mason Township, Murray County and attended country school. As a young girl Marge helped on the family farm and also worked for area families. She later worked at the Slayton Home Hospital as a nurse’s aid. On March 6, 1947 she and Palmer Peterson were married in Slayton. Following their marriage they made their home in Slayton. To this union five children were born, Richard, Robert, Marion, Judy and Jim. Together they ran the City Hotel. Palmer passed away on January 8, 1961. On December 10, 1962 she and Gordon Gehlsen were married in Slayton. They made their home in Slayton, and to this union a daughter, Sheila was born. Marge sold the hotel but continued to work there for seven years. She later worked at the Wheel Inn Cafe and the County Host in Slayton. Gordon passed away on October 25, 2003. Marge remained in her home until 2014 when she moved to Lindenwood Assisted Living in Slayton. Due to failing health Marge moved to Our House Hospice Home in Slayton on December 4, 2020. Where she passed away on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at the age of 96. She was a member of the Slayton Presbyterian Church. She also was a member of the Iona VFW Axillary. She enjoyed being with her family, working in the yard, cooking, playing piano and singing, playing cards, quilting, and making her Mac and Cheese for the grandkids. Marge will be remembered for her love of family, her quick wit, and a good limerick.
Survivors include her four children and their spouses, Richard Peterson of Iona, MN, Judy and Dennis Lickness of Slayton, MN, Jim and Wendi Peterson of Volga, SD, Sheila and Mike Masica of Reedsburg, WI, 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, and two siblings and their spouses, Dave and Marilyn Samuelson of Slayton, MN and Mildred and Henry Hay of Walnut Grove, MN. She is preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Palmer Peterson, and Gordon Gehlsen, two children, Marion Peterson, Robert Peterson, four siblings and their spouses, Lewis Samuelson, Harvey and Virginia Samuelson, Maebelle and George Carlson and Cleota and Bernard Platt.
In an effort to keep everyone safe a private family service will held at the Slayton Presbyterian Church in Slayton on Friday, December 18, 2020 with Rev. Dave Hollis and Rev. Rollin Haynes officiating. The pallbearers are her grandchildren. Interment is at Slayton Memorial Gardens in Slayton, MN.
Per MN Executive Order, masks will be required and social distancing and occupancy limits are to be followed.
