Nicholas Martin Olsem was born in Windom, MN on December 17, 1946, to Martin and Katherine (Cuperus) Olsem. He attended country school through District 48 until eighth grade and graduated from Storden High School in 1964. After graduation, he stayed on the family farm to help his parents and ten siblings until he started his own farm operation with his younger brother Joseph and later Joseph’s sons Mike and Jason. His life was spent working hard on the farm, working on carpentry projects, raising a large garden, and caring for his parents as they aged. While he never married and had children of his own, he loved children, his nieces and nephews. While he worked hard, he also made plenty of time to go fishing (often with his nieces and nephews), smoking carp in a homemade smoker, and several special trips up north to fish at the Lake of the Woods. He also made endless trips around the neighborhood to “check the tilers”. One of his big interests was tiling which has been carried on by Mike and Jason. His true love however was his dogs and spending hours petting them in the “shop” while drinking endless pots of coffee and making the DTN beep all the time. He often wore his hat crooked and went by the nickname “Nublee” and was loved by many. Nick will be dearly missed. Nick passed away on January 2, 2024 at age 77 at Crossroads Care Center in Worthington, MN.
He is survived by brothers: Joseph, Leo, Edward, George, Thomas, Robert, and Richard and sisters Mary Reith and Elizabeth Johnson and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by both his parents, aunt, Annie, brother, John “Fred”, infant sister and nephew, Craig “Boone.”
