Paul Henry Beech

Paul Beech was born on December 21, 1931, on his grandparent’s farm near Iona, Minnesota to George and Minnie Oldewurtel Beech.  He grew up on a farm northeast of Slayton and graduated from Slayton High School in 1949.  On April 24, 1951, He enlisted in the United States Navy and served on the USS Estes.  On July 28, 1951, he and Norma Jean Bloom were married at St. Ann’s Church in Slayton.  Following their marriage, Norma Jean made her home in Vallejo, CA while Paul served in the Navy. Following his honorable discharge, on March 23, 1955, they returned to the family farm near Slayton.  Paul and his brother, Jerry farmed together until the untimely death of Jerry.  Paul then farmed with his son, Mark until his retirement in 2011.  In his younger days Paul was active with the Slayton Golden Gloves teaching many of the Slayton and surrounding area youth boxing.  Norma Jean passed away on May 31, 2006.  Paul passed away surrounded by his family on Monday, February 19, 2024, at the age of 92.  He was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Slayton and in the past served on the finance council.  He also was a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus, and the Broken Arrow Archery Club being named State Barebow Champion in 1975 and 1976.  Paul took great pride in being a member of the St. Labre Indian School Society helping to educate and transform lives.  Paul enjoyed hunting, fishing, side-by-side riding with his dogs around the farm, archery, boxing, visiting with family and friends and his dogs.  Paul taught his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to have a strong faith and to honor God and this was taught by example.  He greatest joy came from his family and his love of God.

Survivors include his six children and their spouses, Candace and Steven Ray of North Mankato, MN, Cynthia and Del Determan of Brooks, MN, Paul M. and Gail Beech of Pelican Rapids, MN, Steven and Elaine Beech of Red Wing, MN, Cathrine and Michael DeMars of Thief River Falls, MN, and Mark and Nancy Beech of Slayton, MN, special family friends, Craig and Shannon Bakke of Fulda, MN, and Brey and Jessica Maurer of Hager City, WI, 18 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren, one brother-in-law, Rod Schuur of Slayton, MN and many nieces and nephews and their families.  He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, infant son, Bruce, granddaughter, Kelly Beech and three siblings, Gerald (Jerry) and Thelma Beech, Audrey Schuur and George and Elizabeth (Betty) Beech. 

Funeral Services

IHM Church in Currie, MN on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. with Fr. Peter Schuster officiating.  The organist is Patty LeClaire.  The song leader is Linnea Surprenant.  The pallbearers are Rebecca Cope, Jess Determan, Travis Beech, Patrick Beech, Anna Erbey, and Nathan Beech.  Interment is at St. Ann’s Cemetery in Slayton, MN.  Military Honors accorded by the Slayton American Legion Post.  The family would like to extend a special thank you to Paul’s caregivers who made it possible for him to stay in his home.  Thank You, McKenna, Jeannie, Jackie, Carol, Steph, Debra, Connie and Murray County Hospice. 

Visitation will be on Friday, February 23, 2024, at IHM Church in Currie, MN from 4-6 p.m. and one hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday.  Totzke Funeral Home of Slayton is entrusted with arrangements.  To view online obituary and send condolences visit In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to St. Ann’s Church or Murray County Hospice.
