Richard "Rich" Lanners Obituary

In Loving Memory of

Richard Anthony Lanners

Rich Lanners was born on June 14, 1931, on the farm in Iona Township, Murray County, Minnesota to Nicholas and Mary Weinzetl Lanners.  He grew up on various farms in the Iona area and graduated from St. Columba High School in 1949.  On March 15, 1951, Rich enlisted in the United States Navy.  Following his honorable discharge on March 1955 he returned to the farm near Iona.  On November 17, 1959, he and Patricia “Pat” Illg were married at St. Ann’s Church in Slayton, MN.  Following their marriage, they farmed west of Iona until 1964 when they purchased a farm south of Iona and raised their four children.  They retired in 2004 and moved to Slayton.  Rich continued to help on the farm through the fall of 2020.  Pat passed away on January 9, 2015.  Rich remained in Slayton until August 2020 when he moved to Maple View Estate in Fulda.  On his 90th Birthday Rich suffered a debilitating stroke.  He passed away at Ava’s House in Sioux Falls, SD on Wednesday, June 16, 2021.  Rich was a lifetime member of St. Columba Church in Iona where he served as usher and on various church boards and committees.  He also was a member of the Iona VFW Post the Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Order of Foresters.  Rich served on the Fulda School Board from 1979 to 1988 and was able to present each of his children with their high school diploma.  Rich enjoyed spending time with his family, watching his grandchildren actives, watching the Minnesota Twins, coffee with friends, visiting with people and the occasional bus trip to area casinos.  But what Rich enjoyed the most was how people all over the country celebrated his birthday (Flag Day) by putting US flags out for him.

Survivors include his four children and their spouses, Lynne and Ed Herrmann of Delano, MN, Lori and Rick Goedtke of Fulda, MN, Dean Lanners of Iona, MN, Marcy and Aaron Barritt of Garvin, MN, eight grandchildren, Wade and Shannon Herrmann, Jamie and Trevor Agorua, Brittany and Brett Perish, Tyler Goedtke, Michelle and Jared Schrempp, Sam Goedtke, Lindsey Barritt and Sydney Barritt, seven great-grandchildren; Cloe and Lola Herrmann, Lincoln, Theodore and Arthur Perish, Tucker, Riley Schrempp and baby Schrempp on the way; two siblings, Sylvester Lanners of Mesa, AZ, and Joyce Schoo of Richfield, MN.  He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Pat, sister, Bernice McCormick and her husband, Patrick “Mick”, one sister-in-law, Carolyn Lanners, and one brother-in-law Phil Schoo.
