Robert “Bob” “Red” Bruce Snelling
Bob Snelling was born July 13, 1944, in Slayton, Minnesota to Leo and Edith Staples Snelling. He grew up in Slayton and graduated from Slayton High School in 1962. Following graduation Bob enlisted in the United States Army receiving a honorable medical discharge later that same year. Bob returned to Minnesota and moved to Minneapolis, MN for a short time before moving to Mason City, IA where he worked as a Licensed Masseuse. In 1968 he moved to Oxnard, CA and served as the manager of the Oxnard Airport. On May 13, 1969, he and Linda Catherman were marriage at the United Methodist Church in Slayton. Following their marriage, they made their home in Oxnard later moving to Fair Oaks, CA where Bob worked for the Fair Oaks Fire Department for 10 years. Following Bob’s early retirement, they moved to Shingle Springs, CA where Bob was a real estate agent. In 1981 the family moved to Washington State. He and Linda divorced. Bob remained in Washington running a cattle ranch until 1992 when he returned to Slayton. On November 20, 1994, he and Betty Natte Tyrell were married in Lake Tahoe, NV. Following their marriage, they made their home in Slayton. He and Betty enjoyed attending area dances. Due to failing health Bob moved to the Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Fulda, MN in November 2023. He passed away there on Friday, January 5, 2024, at the age of 79. He was a member of the Slayton United Methodist Church. Bob enjoyed buying and collecting silver and gold, watching the Hadley Buttermakers, watching the Minnesota Vikings, playing cards especially Pinochle, and visiting with friends.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Tyrrell-Snelling of Slayton, MN, two children, Kimberly Martin of Farmington, MI, and Kurt Snelling of Northville, MI, stepson, Charles Tyrell and his wife Kathy of Lebanon, MO, one sister, Connie and Richard Mattice of Grand Rapids, MI. He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother and his wife, Duane and Connie Snelling, two stepsons, Roger and LaDonna Tyrell and Ronald Tyrell.
Funeral Services
United Methodist Church in Slayton, MN on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Ethanie Schmidt officiating. The organist is Janet Voges with special music by Kaylan Snelling. The pallbearers are Jerry Braun, Myron Bennett, Shane Johanning, and Arlyn Stokesbary. Interment is at Slayton Memorial Gardens, Slayton, MN.
