Sherman “Sam” Emil Toner
Sam Toner was born on January 24, 1937 in Slayton, Minnesota to Emil and Anna Moen Toner. He grew up in Slayton and graduated from Slayton High School in 1955. Sam was a member of the Minnesota National Guard from 1959 to 1965. On June 23, 1962 he and Connie Lubke were married in Pipestone, MN. Following their marriage they made their home in Slayton. Sam worked at Nordins SuperValu in Slayton and in 1970 he became a partner in the business and in 1996 he purchased the grocery store. Sam retired and sold the store in 2003. Sam and Connie enjoyed many winters in Arizona. Sam passed away on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at the age of 83. He was a member of the Slayton Presbyterian Church where he served as elder and trustee. He also was a member of the Slayton Chamber of Commerce, the Slayton Kiwanis Club and the Slayton Volunteer Fire Department. Sam enjoyed fishing, coin collecting, vintage cars, playing Pinochle, shooting pool, bowling and traveling.
Survivors include his wife, Connie Toner of Slayton, MN, three children, Kari Donlan her husband, Michael of St. Paul, MN, Kristen Toner Mankato, MN, and Mark Toner his wife, Terri of North Oaks, MN, two grandsons, Zachary Toner and Alexander Toner, and one brother, Charles Toner of Denver, CO. He is preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Eleanor Berglund.
In an effort to keep everyone safe a private family service will be held at the Slayton Presbyterian Church in Slayton, MN on Saturday, December 19, 2020 with Rev. Dave Hollis and Rev. Rollin Haynes. Interment will be at Slayton Memorial Gardens in Slayton, MN. In lieu of flowers or donations, the family ask that those that are able donate blood and support their local food shelf.
Per MN Executive Order, masks will be required and social distancing and occupancy limits are to be followed.
