In Loving Memory Of

Charles Aloysius Platt Sr.

Chuck Platt was born on June 22, 1927 on a farm east of Iona, Minnesota to Fred and Catherine Hoffman Platt. He grew up on the family farm and attended St. Columba School in Iona.  In 1936 the family moved to a farm northwest of Iona. On November 29, 1950 Chuck enlisted in the United States Army and served with the 7th Infantry Division in Korea.  He was honorably discharged on August 28, 1952 with the rank of Sgt. 1st Class.  He was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge, Korean War Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star, and an Overseas Bar.  On December 28, 1953 he and Mary Alice Myers were married in Marshalltown, IA.  Following their marriage they farmed with Chuck’s brother, Mark.  In 1965 they moved to Slayton and Chuck built the Family Car Wash in Slayton. His partnership with his brother continued until Mark retired in 1982.  Chuck continued farming until his retirement in 1990 at which time he also sold the car wash to his son Chuck Jr.  Chuck passed away at his home in Slayton on Monday, July 18, 2016 at the age of 89.  He was a member of St. Ann’s Church in Slayton.  Chuck’s faith was very important to him.  Chuck loved music and was able to play the organ, accordion and the harmonica.  He enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, riding his motorcycles, dancing, and growing prized watermelons.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Platt of Slayton, MN; four children and their spouses; Chuck Jr. and Pat Platt of Slayton, MN, Rick and DeEtte Platt of Iona, MN, Denise and Joe Carlson of Iona, MN, and Alice and Pat Heard of Lake Wilson, MN; 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.  He is preceded in death by his parents, infant daughter, Diane Mary, four brothers and their spouses, Francis, Mark, Paul and Bernard Platt and three sisters and their spouses, Marie Bissen, Sylvia Gunderson, and Clara Larson.

Funeral Services

St. Columba Church in Iona, MN on Friday, July 22, 2016 at 10:30 AM with Fr. Gregory Parrott officiating and Fr. James Seitz con-celebrating.  The organist is Fr. Tim Biren.  The song leader is Sheila Crowley.  The pallbearers are his grandchildren.  Interment is at St. Columba Cemetery in Iona, MN. 

Visitation will be on Thursday, July 21, 2016 at St. Columba Church in Iona, MN from 4-7 p.m. with a prayer services at 7:00 p.m.  Visitation will also be one hour prior to the services at the church on Friday.
