Homer Jennings Malmquist

Homer Malmquist was born on December 11, 1928 in Fairmont, Minnesota to Anthony and Anna Smith Malmquist.  In 1929 the family moved to Rushmore, MN.  Homer graduated from Worthington High School in 1946.  On August 28, 1949 he and Mary Jean Martens were married at the Presbyterian Parsonage in Rushmore.  Following their marriage they made their home in Lake Wilson and Homer worked for Farmers Coop Elevator and Lumber Company in Lake Wilson until 1985 when they moved to Granite Falls, MN for a year.  They then moved to Clara City for a year before settling in Balaton.  In 2013 they moved to Lakeview Senior Housing in Balaton.  Homer passed away at his home on Sunday, April 17, 2016 at the age of 87.  He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Balaton.  Homer was a lifetime member of the Minnesota Deer Association.  Homer enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, camping, gardening and going to auctions. 

Survivors include his wife, Mary Jean Malmquist of Balaton, MN: four children and their spouses, Kim and Kris Malmquist of Granite Falls, MN, Kevin and Cindy Malmquist of Bovey, MN, Kerry and Michelle Malmquist of Marshall, MN and Allison and Cal Gunnink of Odessa, MN; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and two sisters, Joan of Elkhart, KS, and Dixie of George, IA.  He is preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter, Amy Beth Malmquist, great-grandson, Kaden James Doeden, four brothers and their spouses, Sumner and Darlene, Jay and Dot, Burton and Marion, and Kenneth and Gail Malmquist and two brothers-in-law, Al Janssen and Ferris Guenther. 

Funeral Services

Trinity Lutheran Church in Balaton, MN on Thursday, April 20, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Daryl Thul officiating.  The pallbearers are Tony Malmquist, Nathan Gunnink, Bjorn Pearson, Ben Terhaan and Craig Doeden.  Interment is at Sunset Cemetery in rural Rushmore, MN. 

Visitation will be on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at the Totzke Funeral Home in Slayton from 4-7 p.m. and also one hour prior to the services at the church on Thursday.
