Winifred “Winnie” Beatrice Mettling
Winnie Mettling was born on April 12, 1926 in Montevideo, Minnesota to William and Winifred Cromwell Harding. She grew up in Montevideo and graduated from Montevideo High School in 1944. On February 22, 1947 she and Paul William Mettling were married in Mankato, MN. Following their marriage they made their home in Slayton and raised their five children. Winnie served as the secretary for the Slayton Police Department until 2010 when she retired. Paul passed away on January 2, 1994. Winnie remained in their home until 2012 when she became a resident of the Golden Living Center-Slayton where she passed away on Monday, January 30, 2017 at the age of 90. She was a member of the First Reformed Church in Slayton where she was active in circle and Bible study. Winnie spend many years serving the Murray County Fair Board by working in the exhibit booths. She also was active with RSVP in Slayton. Winnie enjoyed visiting with friends, sewing, housework, ceramics and watching sports on TV. She especially enjoyed spoiling her four grandchildren.
Survivors include her three children, Paula Mettling of Hopkins, MN, Pam Mettling of Hopkins, MN, and Perry Mettling and his wife, Kay of Omaha, NE; and four grandchildren, Shannon Mettling, Sydney Mettling, Mallory Kovar and husband, Sam, and Davis Burnham. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Paul Mettling, daughter, Peggy Burnham, son, Phillip “Flip” Mettling, and four brothers, Warren, Wayne, Bob, and Wally Harding.
Funeral Services
First Reformed Church in Slayton, MN on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Aaron Punt officiating. The organist is Viola Hoekman. The pallbearers are Mallory Kovar, Shannon Mettling, Sydney Mettling, Davis Burnham, Sam Kovar and Mark Burnham. Interment is at Slayton Memorial Gardens, Slayton, MN. God Bless Her Memory.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday.
